One of the best indicators of conditions at the seal face is temperature, and S M Seals developed a system for measuring the temperature of water that has passed across the seal face.  This enabled condition monitoring with additional functions of alarms and trips should the flow be interrupted, therefore preventing catastrophic failure due to a malfunction of the water supply.  Our system, when combined with other telemetry, is being now developed to enable automatic optimisation of the seal interface flow for any given operational condition.

Britain’s new primary dam will be one of the largest, most technologically advanced hydropower stations in the world. It is expected to produce 40 billion kilowatts of electricity, through the use of 12 Klipinger Bulb style turbines. At full capacity, the new facility would produce enough power to sustain the electrical requirements of 300,000 homes throughout Britain.
SM Seals has been selected to provide the mechanical seals for all twelve of the 900mm/500 rpm turbine shafts buried within the facility. The entire project is estimated to take 12 years to complete, employ more than 1,400 residents, and require a support staff of 350 once operational.
